Altren Energy removed our old open-loop geothermal heat pump and replaced it with a new 4 ton closed-loop, ground source forced-air heat pump system featuring a variable speed fan, a hot water assist option and a 10kW auxiliary coil for the coldest upstate NY winter days. Altren's principal (Charles) designed and installed the new system, subcontracting the closed loop ground well to a local drilling contractor, which he personally supervised. The new system has functioned optimally for heating and cooling since activation in April 2018. While exact correlation of energy costs and usage with weather year over year is not practical, our home energy usage and costs are lower than before. I was so very thankful when Charles showed up to work on our geothermal system. He was timely, professional, courteous, and effective! We had had several contractors charge us for "diagnostic" visits only to not repair the system. Charles diagnosed it and fixed it for less than others charged to just "diagnose" it! Altren installed my 5 ton open loop system 16 years ago. It replaced an oil system with forced air. Payback was about 6 years. saving $ since. The system has a desuperheater putting cheap warm water into the resistance hot water heater in the winter and free warm water in during AC use in the summer. The system is very low maintenance and dependable. It is covering about 3500 sq ft of an old bldg with mediocre insulation. It also has 5kw of elec. resistance back up which also can kick in during winter extremes. The AC side uses almost half the energy of regular central AC because it is drawing on 52 (or so) degree ground water.
