ILM Public Observation Area

Even though we have a pretty small airport in Wilmington, there's still a ton of planes to watch at ILM. You have a great view of the terminals + runway, with a gazebo and lots of benches if you want to sit and watch planes for a while. Only thing it could have to make it better would be a restroom (but logistics and cost get challenging to manage). For any aviation photographers wondering about what lenses to bring, I've had great success with 500-700mm focal length (on full frame) for commercial aircraft, with a bit longer reach helping with some of the smaller planes.

Nice place to chil and plane spot airplanes landing and departing Runways 6-24. They are benches, and further back a gazebo with benches and table as well.

The ILM Public Observation Area is a true hidden gem in Wilmington, especially for aviation enthusiasts! We first visited this spot a few years ago, thanks to a recommendation from my wife's friend who works at the airport, and it quickly became one of our favorite places in town. Tucked away on some back roads, this park is worth every bit of effort to find. Located right next to the air traffic control tower, it offers an incredible, unobstructed view of both runways. The sights here are fantastic, with passenger planes, private planes, and even military jets taking off and landing.
