Gorgeous, absolutely stunning in every way possible! Our family LOVES National Parks, and when we set our sights on Volcanoes National Park for Christmas holidays, we knew we had the opportunity to see and experience something special. The view alone will take your breath away! At first our youngest son was frightened by the sheer size of what he was witnessing, but after a few minutes he was like a veteran hiker in the wild. Our family made the hike rather late in the afternoon. On our next trip, we will walk the floor of the volcano.
Mostly the coolest place I have been. Wish we could of seen the eruption but we didn't. Washing for the orange glow at night but was thwarted by the fog/clouds rolling in. Still had a great time. Lava tube, hiking/walking on the bottom was awesome.
Parking is limited, so you should arrive at least an hour before sunset. It's a 20-30 minute walk to the crater, and it's very windy. But you should definitely go. It'll be a wonderful memory of your life.
An absolutely spectacular stop and one of the most memorable viewpoints in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Standing at the Kīlauea Iki Overlook, you’re treated to a sweeping view straight down into the massive Kīlauea Iki crater, where the hardened lava lake stretches across the valley floor far below. The landscape is raw, dramatic, and almost surreal—truly reminiscent of Middle-earth from The Lord of the Rings, with its dark volcanic rock, steep crater walls, and an overwhelming sense of geological power. The interpretive signage here is excellent and adds real depth to the experience. The maps clearly lay out nearby highlights like the Kīlauea Iki Trail, Nāhuku (Thurston Lava Tube), the Byron Ledge (ʻUēaloha), and the Devastation Trail, making it easy to understand how this overlook fi
The overlook and associated hike leads you into a small crater and next to the rim of another one. Views both in and out of the crater are unique and wonderful. Somewhat steep climb in and out of the crater, but not mandatory, you can just stay one the edge and look in. The active eruption site is visible from one of the trails.
