Manlius Highway Department

May 13, 2025. Not sure why, what appears to be a perfectly good stretch of James Street, is being torn up and resurfaced? More importantly not sure why this work was started before 7 AM when school buses hadn't even picked up kids, nor have most residents left for work.

A young man mowed our "ditch" (which the Town of Manlius dug out to be approximately 6' deep about 10 years ago, while also filling the ditch across the road in and making it LEVEL with the road) by cutting the grass next to the highway only. He drove (flew?) the mower at 45 mph, mowing down only 3' of grass. This left the rest of the ditch full of 6' tall reeds and purple loosestrife and milkweed. It looked hideous. He didn't get anywhere near our mailbox. He also mowed at 45 mph 😳 on the other side of the road and also the rest of the side we live on. I spoke with a woman at the Town of Manlius DPW. My husband had already discovered that the previous mower had retired 2 weeks prior. That man had removed every bit of growth from the lower flat part, as well as the steep upper slope

We bought our house 13yrs ago in September. I have been impressed by the garbage and brush pick up and road maintainence in all weather. However, our property backs to Taylor rd. Behind our property are town owned pines. Town told me if 22' or less from tree to center stripe on road, they are town responsiblity. We have a 2 story w/ a walk out basement, as our house is on an incline. Trees are further down the incline but are taller than our house! Several phone calls for the town to remove the trees, to no avail. In almost 13yrs, we have replaced 3 pool pumps due to the insects and tree debris that fall from the trees. Told by DPW worker doing work down the road from my house that they would pick up brush from downed tree in my yard that was cut into pieces. He said to call the office. I called the office and the woman who answered the phone told me that they didn't say that. It's always nice to be called a liar by someone who is supposed to work for the town. Seriously considering throwing this all in the middle of the road.

I've lived in the Town Of Manlius for 5 years and during that time have had to call upon the Highway Department for several small things. They are prompt and courteous...even to the point of doing more than they have to. Compared to other Towns in which I've resided we have it very good here in the Town Of Manlius
