Great hike and the view from up there is really worth the effort. The hike was pretty hard I would say with a decent amount of stairs and steep climbs, but we made it! Really nice forest ranger guy at the top offering water for the dogs which was really cool I thought also. Fall foliage was off the charts today and we saw many great people along the way as well as several dogs... Highly recommend the hike, but like I said it was a bit of a climb for those not in the best shape like myself.
We parked at the Old Dinch Rd parking area and hiked up to the fire tower. The first 2/3 of the trail is tranquil forests with very modest inclines at times. The last 1/3 of the trail was steep at times and definitely got the blood flowing. We aren't the most athletic of folks but pushed through and made it to the top. It was so worth it for the amazing views. There were volunteers at the top that gave tours of the fire tower and chatted for a while. Bring cash to give these kind souls a tip for their time and interesting tour!
Great place for a hike, nice trail & decent amount of parking, no bathrooms at the trailhead however (at least during early spring). The view from the tower was superb even if the cab was locked. There are also picnic tables at the summit, an outhouse & an old cabin that was also locked. Great place to watch for birds as well.
Loved this hike!! Part of the ADK and Catskills fire tower challenges. Easy parking off a main road, road and lot both plowed in winter. It's not a huge lot, but this hike isn't super popular in the winter anyway. Well marked start for trail. Lots of natural stone steps. You can see the neversink at the start. The trail weaves between boulders and the switchbacks were installed thoughtfully so nothing gets too steep. It's a gentle, fun easy-side-of-moderate hike. After the junction with the old dinch road trail it gets a bit more steep, but not bad. Cabin of the fire tower at the top was closed in winter. Beautiful views from near the top anyway. 4.3 miles round trip-- use this denning road trail and not the older dinch road one, this one is clearly well loved and maintained. I am told the
This was a great little hike and first of three watch towers that we did in one day. I’m glad we started off with this one. It gets you ready for Tremper and Balsam. The path is composed of rocks and tree roots and is an incline but it was only a mile and half hike. The tower was closed and so was the cabin so we didn’t get to see the view from all the way. The view was beautiful and you’re just a little above the trees. We will be coming back in the fall to do the towers again.
