I would give SMO 0 stars if possible. They charge way more than any other local company for heating oil. I called three other companies who said their rate was around $3, meanwhile I was charged nearly $5 for SMO. They offered no incentive to keep a long-term customer, instead took just about 30 minutes to cancel my account and I still had to call back to get proper documentation showing my account was actually cancelled. I highly recommend you do research and find a better company near you who deserves your business and treats their customers with respect.

If there were zero stars, that’s what I’d give them. Twice they have charged me over $600 that I didn’t ask for. In order to start discussions about a possible propane delivery I needed to establish an account and give them my credit card info. After hearing their costs, I told them I was going to research other options. So SMO charged me over $600 without permission. Their present rate is over $6 per gallon. The average rate in MD is in the $2 range. SMO said that their rate is higher because they have no hidden fees. But they couldn’t tell me why their rate is over $6. They said “delivery is expensive.” SMO never sent me an invoice for the bill, likely because they didn’t do any work. I was told I didn’t have authorization to handle billing or delivery and that an account was required, even though service had previously been established at this address. I was told the account was closed and might be under a prior homeowner or rental company. The representative talked over me constantly, raised her voice, and ultimately hung up on me. Completely unprofessional and unacceptable. I was also told they were booked out until January 6, meaning someone else connected to the property would have to call. I have been a customer since 2017. I own my own 500 gallon propane tank and only need to get it filled about every 2 years. The price has always been around $3 pretty gallon. When I filled up in September 2025, they pre-charged me for 400 gallons and promised a refund for the unused portion. Once everything was settled, the total cost came to $6.089 per gallon, over twice the market rate at the time. I've called several times and have been told every time that this is the correct price and that's what happens when you are serviced so infrequently. A SMO technician ruined my oil furnace. I called for a small leak in the tubing from my oil tank to the furnace and ended up with a damaged furnace. The technician twisted the spray nozzle tubing so bad the furnace could not get any fuel. I found this out after I complained and they sent out another technician to find the problem. When I asked the first technician what he had done, he stated he did not know. I then had to wait for SMO to find a replacement spray nozzle apparatus of which they never did find one. They attempted to repair the damaged one. I also told them my furnace was vibrating badly after the first technician damaged it.
