Walker Power Building

Between 1887 and c. 1895, Hiram Walker's Lake Erie & Detroit River Railway (LE&DR) maintained a locomotive turntable here -- the remains of which lie preserved under a glass floor, located near the northwest corner of the 1910 Walker Power Building. Railroad turntables like this one, common fixtures at "the end of the line", often included roundhouses where steam locomotives were maintained. Reportedly, a long-gone roundhouse partially-surrounded the north side of the surviving turntable pit. After the turntable was de-commissioned c. 1895 -- supposedly, it didn't work very well -- it's likely that locomotive-turning took place at a nearby "wye" (Google coordinates 42°19'28.3"N 83°00'25.8"W) -- the rails for which were removed c. 2013. LE&DR later became part of Pere Marquette Railway (PM)

A beautifully renovated facility which still incorporates some of the original railroad (turnstile) tracks beneath a clear glass floor!
