West Mitten Butte

The summit, for this amazing butte, which is named for its distinctive resemblance to a mitten-like shaped glove, rises to an elevation of 6,176 feet. The butte is composed of layered sedimentary rock, primarily sandstone, including Organ Rock Formation, de Chelly Sandstone, and Moenkopi Formation and the red color of the rocks is due to iron oxide in the sediments. This butte along with the East Mitten Butte, are two of the most iconic landmarks that appear to be giant mittens when viewed from the south, with their thumbs facing inward. in the valley. For even a closer look, take the Wildcat Trail, which is also the only self-guided trail in the park, that allows you to hike around the butte. Monument Valley is one of my favorite spot on Earth. Very difficult to describe, even the best photos and videos can't show the real beauty. Totally different from a distance. When you get closer to individual monuments its shape is changing (at least it looks that way), colors are changing during the day, and the entire landscape just ... well ... monumental. Don't miss it.
