Bucks County Academy of Fencing

Over the past month, my children experienced an introduction to a taste of fencing. Both my daughter and son thoroughly enjoyed the enthusiastic instructor Jon Kurpaska. Not only was he knowledgeable about the art of fencing, but he was fun and created a welcoming environment. Both my son and daughter were excited to go every Tuesday over the past month and developed a passion for the sport. Our family appreciates the experience of a liberating environment and the education of fencing. We Highly recommend everyone shout give it a try.

I started taking fencing lessons at BCAF in the Fall of 2024. As a more "mature" student, it did feel odd to be the only one in the intro course over the age of about 15, but it is definitely fun! The instructors are terrific. The classes are challenging but I'm having a blast. It is a tremendous workout, but you don't feel like you are working. The kids in the class also seem to be having a great time. I highly recommend BCAF!

Fencing is not just for kids! I am in my mid 50's and rediscovered fencing when my kid wanted to try it 10 years back. Used to do this in High School and now just couldn't stand sitting on the side lines. There have been quite a few "Daddy-Daughter" (and "Mother-Son") student combo's coming through my classes. I just like playing with swords and having a great, full-execise option that's fun to do...and folks are doing this competitively even into their 70's! I want to be that old guy giving the teens a run for their money on the fencing strip when I'm 70! This is a sport that rewards wit and thinking just as much as athleticism. My daughter got bit by the fencing bug 7 years ago after seeing it on PBS KIDS. We found BCAF and the rest is history. It wasn't long after she started, that I gave it a try (in my mid 40's then), then my wife, then my younger daughter once she turned 8. I found it to be a great sport where you can compete at any age and against any age opponent. There's a great combination of physical prowess, mental alertness and planning that other activities last. "Physical chess" is the best in a nutshell description I've heard for it. As an older fencer new to the sport, pay attention to those warm ups and don't neglect a cool down either. You can do it! You'll likely need more preparation than a twelve year old. BCAF offers fantastic instruction for any age. I began with the Taste of Fencing course in early February 2022 and was immediately hooked, in large part due to the welcoming environment and exceptional coaching. I am 41 had no experience fencing other than a college course for credit 20+ years ago. The coaches take time not only to refine technique, but also to explain the reasoning behind the movements and methods. I would recommend BCAF to anyone looking to learn a new sport and get a good work out regardless of age.
