Gilmore Landscape truly had a vision to make the most of our awkward urban side and rear yards. Hemmed in by a towering school building on two sides and an MBTA station beyond that, GLA planted a grove of birch trees to screen the building and buffer the sound of the T station. In summer we are able to sit tranquilly in our back yard rock garden admiring the baptisia, lavender, wild geraniums, ferns, oak leaf hydrangeas and birch trees surrounding us and have a feeling of being in a faraway beautiful spot. Our side yard is like a room complete with a blue stone patio for entertaining that is out of view of the large building beyond our fence. I had a big job to get my deck, patio, driveway, backyard, front yard and fence completely redone and needed a design-build firm that had the aesthetic I was looking for. I saw a job Rob had done in a nearby neighborhood that I absolutely loved and contacted him immediately. Rob and his team designed an amazing plan and listened to what we wanted: a space that fit our modern aesthetic with landscaping that was native-pollinator and animal friendly while being fairly low maintenance. I also had an idea for fence that required some additional problem-solving on the design & build and Rob and his team went above and beyond to deliver. Rob Gilmore and his team did a fantastic job. We selected Rob for our yard in Somerville because of his experience transforming smaller spaces into beautiful and functional areas. They came up with innovative ideas for different areas of our yard that we would have never thought of including solutions to our steep driveway that used to freeze into an ice sheet in the winter. They listened to our needs and asked about how we used our yard before making suggestions. They recommended we create an extra set of steps off our front porch to improve accessibility to our side yard. They created unique planters around a new patio to allow us to garden. We presented Rob and his team with lots of challenges - design requirements that were somehow both specific and vague, quirky and rocky terrain, access limitations, and intractable town zoning restrictions. Rob and his team overcame all of the above to give us exactly what we were hoping for – even if we couldn’t always articulate what it was we wanted. Rob, Ian and the whole team were absolutely fantastic to work with. They spent a lot of time with me in the planning phase of the project to learn how I wanted to use the space and came up with a beautiful design that met all of those needs and more. I really appreciated how there was room for me to be hands-on when I wanted and more hands-off on decisions I didn't feel strongly about and they could run with based on the overall vision for the project. From a budgeting perspective, they were very detailed and on top of expenses throughout the project.
