Like most Florida State Parks, Windley Key Fossil Reef Geological State Park is a wonderful place... that could be even better if it were adequately staffed. It is easily the most peaceful natural place one can go in the entire Village of Islands (a.k.a. the City of Islamorada). Most of the park visitors that stop here would love a guided walk with a knowledgeable Park Ranger, or even with a qualified, and well-trained volunteer. But Florida's State Parks can't add positions as needed; creating a new position requires legislative authorization. Even the park's nature center was closed. Surely that one-room interpretive facility could have been safely opened to some limited number of people (wearing their masks) at a time, and still been safe for visitors and staff.
