Shell Mound Observation Deck

Great quick hiking location with maintained trails and plenty of wildlife. Went in early Dec and it was great! No bugs and cool breezes. Two trails one 1 mile. The other .5 mile.

What a beautiful view... Watch airboats and kayakers go by. Fish from here on the pier, saw one crab, don't know how good the crabbing may be... Take a moment and try to imagine being one of the Native Americans that lived here around the year 1,000...

Did not know what to expect. The closer we got the less road we had, finally we were on a dirt track cut through trees covered with Spanish Moss hanging down, it was pretty neat. We still had no sight of the Shell Mound, but there was a parking area with stairs heading through trees, so we followed the path. We came to the sign board, finding out that we had arrived and were standing atop of our destination...LOL We enjoyed reading about the mound and then we strolled to the shore enjoying the peace and tranquility. It was well worth our time.

Rebuilt and very nice 7/14/2024. Great place to sit and relax maybe watch the sunset. Bathrooms available, hiking trails, there is a boat ramp and I have seen a lot of kayaks launch from here. Close to Cedar Key so great to be able to visit the Cedar key area then go over here. There is a camping area right down the road. Although I don't know the fees. It looked well maintained, with another boat ramp. This pier dock was just rebuilt after Hurricane Idalia so it is really nice. Gravel parking areas and I saw a handicapped spot. The ramp is accessible for persons with disabilities also. There are bathrooms. Overall a nice day trip. The views are really incredible here. Lot of Marsh land. From the pier you can see the Shell Indi an Mounds also.

Good to see it is still here. Visited in summer of 2001 or 2002 and stayed at The Island Place, celebrating my late father's retirement. Came here exploring the shell mounds, as I was an archaeology buff. The rest of the family put up with me. Good to see hurricanes have not washed it away or that it has been rebuilt.
