Yorkville Glockenspiel

A 77’ mural by Richard Haas, commissioned by the developers of the Cielo apartment building located across the street and completed in 2005 for a cost of $200,000. At the top of the mural is a painted glockenspiel, with two NYC police officers mounted on horses depicted below: one facing forward and one backward. Detailed gargoyles are painted at the street level, with life-like painted windows exposing a sewing machine, a mannequin, and a rack full of clothes on hangers. Painted on a tenement building, the overall theme is a nod to Yorkville’s Germanic heritage.

The mayor of the upper east side lives in this building; every morning I look at it from the outside and thank him for his service. He is a kind man, and we love him. #gratefulfortheglockenspiel
