Ecopassage Observation Boardwalk

#throwback2019 Random stop. Zero expectations. Accidentally found one of my favorite places on Earth. This 22,000 acre prairie just casually existing since forever, looking all calm and innocent, like it doesn’t house wild horses, bison, and a suspicious number of unseen alligators. Didn’t see a single gator. Which somehow made it more unsettling. You just know they’re there. Watching. Judging. The serenity here is aggressive. The kind where the wind moves through tall grass like it’s narrating a nature documentary. Few people. Few sounds. Just sky, marsh, and the occasional existential thought creeping in. It’s the type of peaceful that makes you whisper for no reason. Even your footsteps feel loud. Sunsets here don’t try too hard, they just casually remind you you’re small. Came for

Great side of the road attraction that allows you to enjoy the flora and fauna of the prairie with just a small walk from the car. On our visit there was quite a bit of wildlife activity including a few of the famous wild horses of the prairie. It is a busy roadway so be careful pulling out of the parking area.

This is a fantastic FREE place to spot wildlife out in the prairie and I go so lucky yet again! Bison, horses, alligators - happy camper!!

Great observation area. During the dry season (+/- November to May), bison and wild horses often get close. In the rainy season, the area floods and there are plenty of gators visible. BRING BINOCULARS. Both photos were taken in February.

When we drove by this spot earlier in the day on Christmas Day 2025 there were bison right at the end of the boardwalk, but we only stopped there a few hours later. By then they were further away, but it was still cool to see, plus some of the horses were seen way off in the distance. Since we are in drought conditions there was no water at the boardwalk so no gators, but apparently it's rare for the bison to be right there so that was cool. Parking was a bit crowded but we got right in and out of a spot. Definitely worth stopping at to look out over there prarie which is very cool.
